Santorini Thira Airport in a Nutshell

Santorini Airport, also known as Thira Airport (the island of Santorini is still sometimes referred to as Thira), is one of the few international airports located on a Greek island, especially within the Cyclades complex. In addition to serving civil aviation, it is also used by the Greek military. Santorini International Airport (JTR) is located on the eastern side of the island, north of Kamari village, and approximately 5km / 3.1 miles from the island’s capital, Fira.

In 2015, Santorini Airport became part of the Fraport Greece group. At that time, an extensive renovation and expansion plan was announced, including the enlargement of terminal facilities, the addition of new check-in counters, and improved departure areas. The project was successfully completed by 2021. As a result, JTR Airport has preserved its traditional architectural character while being fully modernized with contemporary design elements and upgraded facilities. Today, despite its compact size, the airport is capable of handling up to nine airlines simultaneously.

Overall, Santorini Airport ranks among the top 10 busiest airports in Greece, currently holding the 8th position. Following a sharp decline during the Covid-19 pandemic, passenger traffic has steadily recovered. In 2022 alone, JTR Airport welcomed nearly 1 million visitors.

Santorini Airport’s Layout

After Fraport Greece acquired Santorini Airport, a new era began for the island’s aviation hub. The airport underwent major renovation and expansion works. While the single terminal building retained its traditional exterior, inspired by Santorini’s local architecture, its interior was fully modernized. Today, Arrivals and Departures are housed on the same level, and the terminal provides a limited but efficient range of high-quality services and amenities.

Airlines Operating at Santorini Airport

As one of Greece’s busiest airports, Santorini Airport serves both scheduled and charter flights. During the peak tourist season — from spring to early autumn — JTR Airport handles high passenger volumes, mainly through charter services from mainland Greece, other Greek islands (including Crete), and numerous international destinations. During winter, traffic is significantly reduced, with only a few mostly domestic routes operating. Major airlines present at JTR include Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air, and Ryanair.
