Rail Connections on Santorini Island

Unlike mainland Greece, Santorini (Thira) is an island without any railway infrastructure. As a result, Santorini Thira Airport (JTR) is not connected to any train, suburban railway (Proastiakos), metro, or rail station. In fact, there are no trains operating anywhere on the island.

Is There a Train Station at Santorini Airport?

No. Santorini does not have a railway network at all. Therefore, rail travel is not possible directly from or to Santorini Airport.

How to Continue Your Journey by Train from Santorini

If your itinerary includes train travel within Greece, you must first leave the island and reach the mainland. This is done in two stages:

To access Greece’s railway system, travelers must first travel from Santorini to Athens using one of the following options:

Once in Athens, you can reach Greece’s main railway hub:

Larissis Railway Station (Athens Central Station)

From Larissis Station, train connections are available to:

  • Thessaloniki (InterCity trains)
  • Larisa, Volos, Katerini
  • Northern Greece destinations
  • Other mainland cities via regional routes

Alternative Transportation Options on Santorini

Since trains are not available on the island, transportation within Santorini relies exclusively on:

  • KTEL public buses
  • Taxis
  • Private airport transfers
  • Car rentals, scooters, and ATVs

For airport transfers, taxis, private transfers, and car rentals are the most popular options, as bus schedules can be limited or unreliable, especially during the high tourist season.

Important Tips for Travelers Expecting Train Connections

  • There are no trains on Santorini — plan ferry or flight connections instead.
  • All rail journeys must be routed via Athens (Piraeus Port or ATH Airport).
  • Ferry tickets from Santorini sell out quickly in summer — book in advance.
  • Allow sufficient buffer time when combining ferries or flights with train departures.

Although Santorini Airport does not offer any rail connections, onward train travel is easily accessible once you reach mainland Greece, with Athens serving as the central gateway to the Greek railway network.
