Santorini has exactly one airport. On tickets it appears as Santorini, Thira or Thera; its code is JTR. It sits on the island's east coast about 6 km from Fira, so the "nearest airport to Santorini" is Santorini itself. If your city has no direct flight, you connect through Athens — a 45 to 55 minute hop — or take the ferry.

One island, four names: what each word on your ticket means
The same airport shows up under different labels depending on where you look — the airline's booking engine, the departures board, the ferry timetable, a hotel map. None of them is wrong; they are simply different names for the same place.

The one pairing that trips people up is Thira and Fira. Fira is the capital town on the caldera rim; Thira is the whole island. A hotel "in Thira" can be anywhere on Santorini, while a hotel "in Fira" is in the town. The airport is on Thira but not in Fira: it sits on the flat eastern side of the island, roughly 6 km south-east of Fira, by the village of Monolithos and next to Kamari.
How many airports does Santorini have?
One. Santorini (Thira) Airport, JTR, is the island's only airport and its only runway. It opened in 1972 and remains a joint civil and military airfield. Since 11 April 2017 the civil terminal has been run by Fraport Greece under a 40-year concession covering 14 regional Greek airports, Mykonos, Rhodes, Corfu and Thessaloniki among them.
It is a small airport carrying a lot of people. Operator traffic data put 2025 at 2,418,219 passengers — 1,085,988 domestic and 1,332,231 international — which is 16% below the 2,877,122 of 2024; the operator has pointed to the early-2025 seismic activity around the caldera as a factor. Nearly all of that traffic arrives between late April and October, when the direct European routes run; from November to March the schedule is predominantly the Athens link. In July and August the size of the building shows: baggage reclaim runs on only one or two carousels, and queues build at security whenever several departures overlap. Where is the airport, and what is the "nearest airport" to Fira or Oia?
Search engines see a lot of "nearest airport to Santorini" and "closest airport to Oia". The nearest airport to every village on Santorini is JTR, because there is no other. What changes is the drive.

What if there is no direct flight from your city?
Direct flights to JTR are seasonal and mostly European. Outside that window, or from further afield, "which airport for Santorini" becomes "which airport do I connect through". Three realistic answers:
Athens (ATH), by air
Athens is the main year-round connection. Aegean, Olympic Air and Sky Express fly Athens–Santorini through the winter, and the flight takes about 45 to 55 minutes; most long-haul itineraries route through it. Athens by ferry instead of by air
From the port of Piraeus, a high-speed boat reaches Santorini in roughly 5 to 6 hours and a conventional ship in about 7 to 9, longer again on multi-stop sailings. Whether it works out cheaper depends on the fare you are actually comparing, so price both for your dates with bags included. A ferry does sit outside the air-traffic-control restrictions that occasionally ripple through Greek airspace in summer, but it is not disruption-proof: sailings are cancelled or delayed by seamen's strikes and by port-authority bans when the meltemi blows hard, and a missed sailing can cost you an onward flight. If the ferry is a connection rather than the whole trip, leave real slack. The trade-offs are laid out in fly or ferry from Athens.
A neighbouring island's airport plus a ferry
Mykonos (JMK), Paros (PAS), Naxos (JNX), Milos (MLO) and Heraklion on Crete (HER) all have airports and all have ferry links to Santorini. This works when the neighbour has a direct flight from your city and Santorini does not. Be realistic about the second leg. It ranges from under two hours — Heraklion to Santorini by high-speed catamaran is about 1 hour 45 — to several hours, depending on the island, the vessel and how many stops it makes. Timetables are seasonal and sailings can be cancelled in high wind, so check the operator's schedule for your exact dates before you commit. Booking mistakes this naming causes
- JTR is not JMK. Santorini and Mykonos are neighbours with similar-looking codes and both are Fraport airports. Read the code on your ticket, not the island's name in your head.
- "Thira" in a hotel address does not mean the town. It usually means the island or the municipality. Look for the village name — Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, Kamari, Perissa — before judging how far you are from the airport.
- "Santorini Airport" and "Thira Airport" on two booking sites are the same place. You are not comparing two airports; you are comparing two labels.
- Do not add "nearest airport" logic from big cities. There is no cheaper secondary airport an hour away. The alternative to JTR is a different island or a ferry, not a different runway.
