All the Real-Time Flight Info and the Best Santorini Airport Ticket Fares

How do you fly to Santorini? Santorini Airport (JTR) has year-round domestic flights to Athens on the Greek carriers, plus a large seasonal wave of direct European flights from roughly late spring to October, when about 38 airlines link the island to around 55 destinations. Outside the summer months most visitors connect through Athens. For summer travel, book early, as the popular routes fill and prices climb. This guide covers where you can fly, whether to fly direct or connect, when to book, and how to check your flight.

Where can you fly to and from Santorini?

Santorini’s network is small and domestic in winter, then expands dramatically for the summer season. These are the typical direct connections; exact routes and days change from year to year, so always confirm with the airline.

RegionTypical direct routesWhen
Greece (domestic)Athens (year-round); Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Rhodes, MykonosAthens all year; others mainly summer
UK & IrelandLondon, Manchester, DublinApprox. April to October
Western EuropeParis, Amsterdam, Rome, Milan, Geneva, ZurichApprox. May to October
Central EuropeVienna, Munich, Warsaw, PragueSummer season

In high season the choice of direct flights is huge; in winter it shrinks to the Athens shuttle, and almost everyone else connects there.

Direct flight or connect through Athens?

If you are travelling from within Europe between late spring and autumn, a direct seasonal flight is usually the fastest option. If you are coming from outside Europe, or travelling in winter, you will almost certainly route through Athens (ATH) and take a short domestic hop to Santorini on Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air or Sky Express. The Athens leg runs frequently all year and takes about 45 minutes. If flight schedules do not line up, the ferry is a scenic alternative worth weighing, as we explain in our guide to flying or taking the ferry from Athens to Santorini.

When to book and the cheapest time to fly

Santorini is one of Greece’s most in-demand destinations, so the usual booking rules apply with extra force:

  • Book summer flights early. Direct European routes for July and August sell well ahead, and last-minute peak-season fares are steep.
  • Shoulder season is the value sweet spot. Late April to early June and late September into October combine lower fares, direct routes still operating, and pleasant weather.
  • Be flexible on days. Midweek departures are often cheaper than weekend ones, when short-break traffic peaks.
  • Compare direct against Athens connections. A connection through Athens can be noticeably cheaper than a scarce direct seat, especially in winter.

Which airlines fly to Santorini?

The year-round core is the three Greek carriers, Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air and Sky Express, all flying primarily to and from Athens. In summer they are joined by low-cost airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air and Jet2, full-service carriers including Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France, and holiday charter operators. For the full carrier list, year-round versus seasonal split and destination details, see our dedicated Santorini Airport airlines guide.

Checking arrivals and departures

JTR is a small, single-terminal airport with limited seating, so there is little point arriving too early or sitting airside longer than needed. Track live status before you set off: see our Santorini Airport arrivals and departures guides for how to check flight times and handle delays. If your flight is disrupted, our flight delays and cancellations guide explains your rights.

Getting to and from the airport

Once your flight is booked, plan the ground leg. The airport sits about 5 km from the capital, Fira, and options range from the cheap KTEL bus to taxis and pre-booked transfers. A private transfer is the smoothest choice with luggage, while the airport bus is the budget pick and a taxi is quickest when cabs are available.
