How do you fly to Santorini? Santorini Airport (JTR) has year-round domestic flights to Athens on the Greek carriers, plus a large seasonal wave of direct European flights from roughly late spring to October, when about 38 airlines link the island to around 55 destinations. Outside the summer months most visitors connect through Athens. For summer travel, book early, as the popular routes fill and prices climb. In high season the choice of direct flights is huge; in winter it shrinks to the Athens shuttle, and almost everyone else connects there.
Direct flight or connect through Athens?
If you are travelling from within Europe between late spring and autumn, a direct seasonal flight is usually the fastest option. If you are coming from outside Europe, or travelling in winter, you will almost certainly route through Athens (ATH) and take a short domestic hop to Santorini on Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air or Sky Express. The Athens leg runs frequently all year and takes about 45 minutes. When to book and the cheapest time to fly
Santorini is one of Greece’s most in-demand destinations, so the usual booking rules apply with extra force:
- Book summer flights early. Direct European routes for July and August sell well ahead, and last-minute peak-season fares are steep.
- Shoulder season is the value sweet spot. Late April to early June and late September into October combine lower fares, direct routes still operating, and pleasant weather.
- Be flexible on days. Midweek departures are often cheaper than weekend ones, when short-break traffic peaks.
- Compare direct against Athens connections. A connection through Athens can be noticeably cheaper than a scarce direct seat, especially in winter.

The year-round core is the three Greek carriers, Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air and Sky Express, all flying primarily to and from Athens. In summer they are joined by low-cost airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air and Jet2, full-service carriers including Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France, and holiday charter operators. Getting to and from the airport
Once your flight is booked, plan the ground leg. The airport sits about 5 km from the capital, Fira, and options range from the cheap KTEL bus to taxis and pre-booked transfers. A private transfer is the smoothest choice with luggage, while the airport bus is the budget pick and a taxi is quickest when cabs are available.
