Santorini Airport (JTR) is a small, single-terminal airport, and that shapes everything about a layover here. There are no lounges, no sleeping pods, and seating airside is limited, so a long wait inside is not especially comfortable. The upside is that the island is right on the doorstep: Kamari is roughly 6 km away and Fira about 5 to 6 km, both reachable in about 10 minutes by taxi. With a few hours to spare, leaving the airport to see a little of Santorini is often the better option, provided you plan the timing carefully.
What facilities does Santorini Airport have for a layover?
JTR is compact and the airside facilities are basic. You can expect:
- Free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal.
- A small selection of cafes and restaurants, mostly in the departures area after security.
- A duty-free shop plus a few small retail outlets (a phone shop and similar).
- ATMs and currency exchange.
- Limited seating, both inside and just outside the terminal.
What it does not have is just as important: there are no airport lounges and no dedicated sleeping or rest areas. If your wait stretches overnight, a nearby hotel is the realistic option rather than the terminal itself.
Can you leave the airport during a layover?
Yes, and for a longer wait it is usually the more rewarding choice. Because the airport is so close to the main resort areas, you can step out, see a little of the island, and return without a long commute. As a rough guide, allow at least 30 minutes for a quick taxi out and back to somewhere like Kamari, and budget realistically for the time you actually spend there.
The key rule is to count backwards from your next flight. Be back through security with comfortable margin: at a small airport, queues and check-in can still take time in peak season, and taxis are not always waiting on demand. If your layover is under about three hours, leaving is risky once you account for bag drop, security, and the return trip. With four hours or more, a short outing is very doable.
Kamari (about 10–15 minutes)
Kamari is the closest resort to the airport, only around 6 km away, with a long black-sand beach and a seafront promenade lined with tavernas. It is the easiest place to grab a meal, a coffee, or a quick swim and still get back in good time. See getting from Santorini Airport to Kamari for transport details.
Fira (about 5–10 minutes)
Fira, the island capital, sits roughly 5 to 6 km from the airport and offers caldera views, shops, and cafes. It is a little busier and parking is harder, so a taxi or transfer makes more sense than driving. Details are on the Santorini Airport to Fira page.
How do you get to and from the airport quickly?
For a time-sensitive layover, a taxi or a pre-booked private transfer is the most reliable choice, since it removes the uncertainty of waiting for a bus. Taxis are available outside the terminal but the local fleet is small and can be scarce at peak times, so do not assume one will be waiting. Pre-booking a transfer with GetTransfer fixes a pickup time both ways, which matters most for the return leg when missing your flight is the real risk. Local Santorini taxis work well for the short hops to Kamari or Fira if you are flexible on timing.
Where can you store luggage during a layover?
This is the main practical catch. Santorini Airport does not have a left-luggage office or lockers, so you cannot simply drop your bags at the terminal before heading out. If you want to explore hands-free, you will need an off-site option in town, typically a luggage-storage service in Fira. Plan this in advance rather than expecting to sort it on arrival. See luggage storage near Santorini Airport for the current options and how they work.
If you are travelling with only carry-on and a few hours to spare, the simplest approach is often to keep your bag with you for a quick coffee or swim nearby and skip storage altogether.
