Santorini Airport (JTR) is a small, single-terminal airport that handles both domestic and international flights from one modest building. Arriving here is straightforward, but in peak summer the volume of traffic can make a simple process feel slow. This guide walks you through what to expect from the moment your plane stops to the moment you leave for your hotel. If a flight you are meeting is running late, our flight delays and cancellations guide explains how to check its status and what your rights are.
Disembarking onto the apron
JTR has no jet bridges. On most flights you walk down the aircraft stairs directly onto the apron, then either walk a short distance to the terminal or take a brief shuttle-bus ride across the tarmac. In summer, with several aircraft on the ground at once, expect a short wait for the bus and a slightly chaotic feel as passengers from different flights converge on the same doors.
Passport and border control
If you are arriving on a flight from within the Schengen Area (for example from Athens, Germany or Italy), there is no passport check on arrival and you go straight toward baggage reclaim. If you are arriving from outside Schengen (including the UK), you pass through border control first.
Since 2026, non-Schengen arrivals also complete the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) on first entry: a passport scan, a photo and fingerprints. This adds time, and during busy periods queues at this small hall can stretch well beyond half an hour. Allow extra patience if you land mid-afternoon when multiple international flights cluster together. For details, see our EES at Santorini Airport guide and the related ETIAS overview.
Baggage reclaim
The baggage hall is small, typically with a single belt (occasionally a second is used at the busiest times). When two or three flights land close together, bags can take 15 to 30 minutes to appear and the area gets crowded fast. There is no left-luggage counter inside the arrivals hall itself; if you need to store bags, see our luggage storage guide.
The arrivals hall
The arrivals area is compact and on the ground floor. Once through baggage reclaim you step into a hall that holds car-rental desks, a small information point, and a short walk to the exit where taxis and the public bus wait. Facilities are limited compared with larger airports, so do not count on extensive shops or seating. For a fuller picture of the building, see our terminal guide.
Getting from the airport to your destination
The airport sits near Kamari on the east side of the island, roughly 6 km from Fira. You have four realistic options once you walk out of arrivals.
| Option | Approx. cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi | ~€20–35 to Fira by day (more late at night) | Limited number of island taxis; the rank can run dry in peak hours |
| KTEL public bus | ~€2.20 to Fira | Stop is just outside arrivals; roughly a 15–25 min ride with stops |
| Pre-booked transfer | Fixed price quoted in advance | Driver meets you; no queue hunting |
| Car rental | Varies | Desks inside the hall; book ahead in summer |
- Taxi: The rank is just outside the doors, but Santorini has very few taxis for its summer crowds, so you may queue. See our airport taxi guide.
- KTEL bus: Cheap and frequent in high season, departing from the stop right outside arrivals toward Fira. Details in our airport bus guide and the airport-to-Fira page.
- Pre-booked transfer: A driver waits in arrivals with your name, which removes the queue lottery after a long travel day. You can arrange one through GetTransfer; see our transfers guide.
- Car rental: Desks are inside the arrivals hall; reserve ahead in peak months as island stock is limited. See car rental at the airport.
