All you Need to Know about Santorini Thira Airport

Eleni Anastasiou · Updated:

Santorini (Thira) Airport, IATA code JTR, is the island's only airport: a compact, single-terminal facility on the eastern side of Santorini near the village of Monolithos, roughly 6 km from the capital, Fira. It handles both domestic Greek flights and seasonal international and charter services, with traffic peaking sharply from late spring to early autumn. This guide gives you the high-level picture of the airport and links out to the detailed pages for arrivals, departures, transfers, and parking.

What is Santorini Airport (JTR)?

JTR is a small but busy airport operated under the Fraport Greece concession. It has a single runway and one passenger terminal, which means arrivals and departures share the same compact building. Despite its size, it absorbs heavy summer volumes, so queues and crowding are common in July and August. The airport sits close to Kamari to the south and Monolithos to the north, putting most of the island within a 10–20 minute drive.

The terminal and facilities

Everything happens in one terminal: check-in, security, a small departures area, and baggage reclaim. Facilities are deliberately kept basic but functional. You can expect:

  • One or two cafes serving coffee, snacks and light meals
  • A small duty-free shop and limited retail (do not expect a large shopping area)
  • ATMs and a currency-exchange desk
  • Car-rental desks for the main agencies
  • Free WiFi and charging points

For a full breakdown of what is and isn't available airside and landside, see the dedicated Santorini Airport terminal page.

Where is the airport and how far is Fira?

DestinationApprox. distanceDriving time
Fira (capital)~6 km10–15 min
Kamari~6 km~10 min
Oia~17 km30–40 min
Athinios (ferry port)~9 km20–30 min

Driving times vary with summer traffic, which can be heavy on the island's narrow roads. If you are connecting to a ferry, allow extra buffer; see getting from the airport to Athinios port.

Getting to and from the airport

There are four main ways to make the journey between JTR and the rest of Santorini:

  • Public bus (KTEL): A budget option linking the airport with the Fira bus station; fares are typically in the €1.80–2.20 range and the trip takes around 10 minutes. Buses are cash-only and seasonal in frequency.
  • Taxi: Santorini has a very small licensed taxi fleet, so availability is limited at peak times and on late flights. Expect roughly €20–35 to Fira by day (more at night) and more to Oia.
  • Private transfer: A pre-booked car or van meets you at arrivals, which is the most reliable choice for night flights or groups. You can arrange one through GetTransfer.
  • Rental car: Collect a vehicle directly from the desks in the terminal if you plan to explore independently.

For the full options and current details, see airport taxis, the shuttle bus, and car rental at the airport.

Parking

The public parking opposite the terminal is free of charge, but spaces are limited and fill quickly in high season. There is no large multi-storey facility. For more on what to expect, see parking services.

Arrivals and departures

Because the terminal is small, arriving and departing passengers move through the same compact spaces. Allow extra time during the summer peak. Detailed walkthroughs are on the arrivals and departures pages.

Accessibility and reduced-mobility assistance

Santorini Airport provides free assistance for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) under EU rules. Arrange it through your airline when you book, or at least 48 hours before departure, so staff can be ready at the aircraft, in the terminal and at the gate.

The terminal is step-free where it counts: there are ramps, a lift and accessible toilets, plus designated disabled parking spaces close to the entrance. Wheelchairs are available on request at the information desk or through your airline, and assistance can cover the whole route through the airport, from the aircraft or the entrance to the gate.

The airport works to published response times: for travellers who booked assistance in advance, help at the aircraft on arrival is targeted within 15 to 25 minutes of landing; for departing travellers who did not pre-book, the wait is capped at 20 to 30 minutes. Booking ahead is always faster and more reliable. Full details are on the official Santorini Airport website.
