Fira, the island's capital, is one of the most popular places to stay in Santorini, with its narrow streets, caldera views, whitewashed houses, and plenty of spots to eat and go out. It also has the island's main bus station and taxi rank, which makes getting there from the airport easy. You have four main options: taxi, KTEL bus, private transfer, or rental car.
| Option | Price | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi (metered, estimate) | about 17–22€ | ~15 min |
| KTEL bus | 2.20€ | ~15–20 min |
By taxi
Grey-and-silver airport taxis are the easy door-to-door choice if you would rather not juggle luggage or directions. You will find the rank right outside the Arrivals hall, so a cab is simple to grab once you land.
Be aware, though, that the island runs only a small fleet, so in high summer the wait can be long; sharing with others heading to Fira is common, and splitting the fare is a sensible move when it happens. Fares are metered, so the total depends on distance, time, and traffic. In normal conditions the 15-minute ride costs about 17€–22€, including the 4€ airport surcharge. Expect extra for luggage over 10 kg (0.40€ per item) and for night rides between midnight and 05:00, when the fare can climb to 22€–27€.
- Most drivers speak English reasonably well.
- Cash is preferred, so carry small bills.
- Some drivers will agree a fixed fare before you set off.
By bus
KTEL public buses link the airport with Fira from a stop just outside the terminal, with a couple of short stops in nearby villages along the way. The trip takes about 15–20 minutes depending on traffic. Buses are air-conditioned and have luggage space with no strict limits, though journeys stretch out at peak times.
Schedules change with the season. In summer buses run roughly hourly through the day, from early morning until the late evening; in winter the service is reduced to a few runs a day, with fewer at weekends, so check the current KTEL timetable. A one-way ticket costs 2.20€, paid in cash to the driver or conductor.
- Schedules can change without notice, and delays happen.
- A ticket doesn't guarantee a seat, so you may have to stand at busy times.
By rental car
Renting at the airport makes sense if you plan to explore on your own. Several companies have desks at Arrivals with a wide choice of vehicles. To reach Fira, head north out of the airport, turn left toward Messaria after about 300 metres, then follow the signs right into Fira, about 15 minutes in normal traffic. Street parking exists in Fira, but the roads are narrow and busy in season, so it is easier to park outside the centre and walk in.
By private transfer
If you would rather skip the taxi queue and the bus timetable, a private transfer is the most predictable choice: meet-and-greet, a fixed price, no waiting, and a direct ride from JTR to your accommodation in Fira.
