Santorini Port Luggage Storage: Old Port, Athinios and Fira (2026)

Eleni Anastasiou · Updated:

There is no luggage storage at Santorini's Old Port, the quay where cruise tenders land. Cruise passengers have to take their bags up to Fira, where walk-in storage starts at about €3 by the hour and day rates run near €5. Ferry passengers at Athinios can pre-book a point beside the port, open 09:00 to 19:00. Find your arrival point in the table below and act on that row.

  • Old Port: no lockers, no counter — the storage map starts at the top of the cliff.
  • Cable car: €10 one way for an adult, plus €5 for a large suitcase, in each direction.
  • A bag for the day: about €5 at a booked point; €3 to €10 in Fira depending on size and hours.
  • Closing times: Athinios 19:00 · Fira bus-station point 21:30 · hourly office in Fira 23:30.

Where the bags actually go

Four options are worth knowing by name, because "book online and we will send you the address" is not much help while you are standing on a jetty.

  • The hourly office in Fira (santorini-luggage.gr) prices by time rather than by day: roughly €3 for hand luggage up to five hours, €5 up to ten and €7 up to eighteen, and about €5, €8 and €10 for a suitcase across the same brackets. In season it runs 07:30 to 23:30 — the only option that comfortably covers a late flight or a night ferry. Open in Maps.
  • Get Santorini Luggage (getsantorini-luggage.gr) charges per day — about €5 for a small bag and €7 for a large one, 08:00 to 20:30 — and also delivers bags between the ports, the airport and hotels.
  • A partner point by the KTEL bus station keeps the longest hours on the island, roughly 06:30 to 21:30, at about €5 per bag per day. It is booked through Bounce, Radical Storage, Stasher or Nannybag, and the exact address arrives after booking. Open in Maps.
  • The Athinios port point sits beside the ferry quay at about €5 per bag per day, 09:00 to 19:00, online booking only and no cash. Open in Maps.

Platform rates are advertised from about €2.50 to €5 per bag per day with insurance included and payment online; the two Fira offices take walk-ins and are frequently cash-only. If you are staying on the island rather than visiting for the day, ask your hotel first — almost all of them hold bags free on arrival and checkout days.

Pick the point by your departure time, not your arrival

This is the decision that goes wrong most often. The storage point does not care when you dropped the bag off; it closes when it closes, and the three closing times are far apart. Athinios shuts at 19:00, which is before a great many evening ferries and most late flights. The bus-station point in Fira runs to about 21:30. Only the hourly office, open to 23:30 in season, covers a genuinely late departure.

So work backwards. A 21:00 ferry from Athinios means storing in Fira and carrying the bag down, not storing at the port. A midnight flight means the hourly office or nothing. And if you are flying rather than sailing, the bag has to be with you before you set off for the airport, because there is no storage at the terminal — our airport luggage guide covers what the terminal does and does not have.

What you can see once the bags are down

The reason to spend €5 is range. What follows is measured from the moment you are standing in Fira with free hands, using 2026 KTEL Santorini fares. Note that almost every route starts or ends at the Fira terminal, so cross-island trips mean changing there.

Time you haveRealistic planGetting there
4 hoursFira caldera path, museum and lunch — or a return run to OiaOia: bus €2.20, about 30 min each way, every 30–60 min
6 hoursOia at a normal pace, or Kamari beach with a swimKamari: bus €2.20, about 20 min · Perissa €2.70, about 25 min
8 hoursVolcano boat trip, or Oia plus a beach, or Pyrgos and Ancient TheraVolcano boats leave the Old Port: 3–3.5 hr round trip plus a €5 park fee — it fits an eight-hour call, rarely a five-hour one

Two buffers keep this honest. Subtract the cable car on the way back down, where 30 to 60 minutes is normal on a cruise afternoon and worst in the last two hours before the ships sail. Then subtract the walk to your storage point and its closing time. Aim to be back in Fira 90 minutes before your tender or ferry, not 30.

Where there is genuinely no storage

Being straight about the gaps saves more time than listing options. There is nothing at the Old Port quay, nothing inside Santorini Airport — no lockers and no left-luggage counter, only trolleys and oversized check-in at the airline desk — and nothing at the bus stops outside Fira. Beaches offer nothing beyond a sunbed attendant's goodwill, which is not a plan for a passport. Ferry ticket offices at Athinios do not hold bags. And no operator takes a bag without either a booking in their system or a person at the desk, which is why "I'll sort it when I get there" fails on a cruise day, when both are saturated.

Why the Old Port became the pinch point in 2026

Since 13 June 2026, no more than 30% of a day's cruise passengers may come ashore at Athinios, the island's road-connected ferry port. The remaining share — around 70% — is tendered to Órmos Fira, the Old Port directly below the town. The rule replaced an earlier 40% allowance and carries real teeth: fines, suspension of activities and criminal sanctions, as reported when the decision took effect. Officials tied it to civil-protection planning after the 2025 seismic crisis and to congestion between the two ports.

Above that sits the daily cap of 8,000 cruise visitors, in force for 2025 and 2026. For 2026 the counting tightened: a ship counts at 100% of its berths rather than 80%, so a 3,000-berth vessel books 3,000 places against the cap instead of 2,400.

The two rules meet at the cable car. The Old Port has no road access — from the quay you go up by cable car, on foot up roughly 600 steps, or by donkey. The cable car's published capacity is 1,200 passengers an hour in total, which is 600 in each direction in six-person cabins. On a day at the cap, roughly 5,600 people land at the Old Port and each of them needs an uphill place. At 600 an hour that is about nine and a third hours of continuous, perfect-flow capacity, against a call window of eight to ten hours. That is the arithmetic behind the 30-to-60-minute queues — and the reason a suitcase in that line is a bad idea: you pay per piece, you take up cabin space, and you do it in both directions.

Mid-August: the week to plan hardest

Two things collide in the middle of August. The cruise cap is hit far more often, and 15 August — Dekapentávgoustos, the Assumption — is the biggest domestic travel date in Greece. Ferries fill with Greek families, buses run standing-room-only, and the storage points in Fira are at their busiest of the year. If your day visit falls between roughly 10 and 20 August, book storage in advance rather than walking in, and add 30 minutes to every buffer above. The same holds for the last week of July, when the season's crest begins.

Practical details that decide the day

  • Carry cash and a card. The Fira offices are frequently cash-only; platform points are the reverse and are paid online in advance. KTEL fares are handed to the conductor onboard and card acceptance is inconsistent, so keep coins.
  • Keep passport, medication and phone with you. Store the bulk, not the essentials — a tender will not wait for a bag left in town.
  • Photograph the bag and the receipt. Staff change shifts, and these are small businesses rather than airport systems.
  • Check size limits before you book. Pricing is per piece, so two cases and a rucksack for a day is three fees, and golf clubs or a bike box may simply be refused.
  • Save the address as a map pin. Fira's lanes are narrow, stepped and badly signed; "next to the bus station" is easier said than found in August.

If you would rather not move the bags at all, Get Santorini Luggage delivers between the ports, the airport and hotels for about €25 per way for up to six pieces, and about €35 to Oia, Finikia and Ammoudi, where vehicles cannot reach most doors. For a family changing hotels mid-stay that beats two taxis.

If your day ends at the airport. A fixed-price car from town avoids hunting a taxi in the evening: you can lock in a pickup time through GetTransfer.com. Our route guides cover the alternatives: airport to Fira and airport to Athinios port.

Whatever you choose, fix the collection time before you leave the storage desk, and plan to be back with a margin rather than a sprint.

This is an independent, unofficial passenger guide. We are not affiliated with Santorini Airport, the port authority, the cable car or any luggage-storage operator, and we may earn a commission from marked booking links at no extra cost to you. Prices, hours and capacity figures were verified in July 2026 against the published rates of the Fira left-luggage operators, the Santorini listings of the main storage platforms, the Santorini Cable Car operator and the 2026 KTEL Santorini fare table, plus the June 2026 port-allocation decision linked above. The 8,000-a-day cap and the 30/70 split are official figures; the uphill-capacity calculation is ours, derived from the cable car's published 600-per-direction hourly capacity. Storage points are small independent businesses whose hours shift with the season, so confirm before you travel.

FAQs

Is there luggage storage at Santorini's cruise port?
Not at the quay. The Old Port has the cable-car station, tavernas and tender berths, but no lockers and no counter. The nearest storage is up in Fira — a three-minute cable-car ride or roughly 600 steps — where a point by the bus station opens about 06:30 to 21:30 and two staffed offices work in the centre.
Can I take my suitcase on the Santorini cable car?
Yes, but it costs about €5 per large case on top of the €10 adult fare, it takes up cabin space in a six-person car, and you pay it in each direction. On a cruise day the queue runs 30 to 60 minutes. That is precisely why it pays to store the bag in Fira after one trip up rather than carry it back and forth.
How much does luggage storage cost in Santorini in 2026?
About €5 per bag per day at a booked partner point, including the one at Athinios. The hourly office in Fira charges roughly €3 for hand luggage up to five hours, €5 up to ten and €7 up to eighteen, and about €5, €8 and €10 for a suitcase over the same brackets. A second Fira operator charges about €5 for a small bag and €7 for a large one per day.
Do I need to book storage in advance, or can I walk in?
Both exist, and the difference matters. The two Fira offices take walk-ins and are often cash-only. Platform points — including the one at Athinios — are online-only, take no cash, and send the address after booking. In the first three weeks of August, book: walking in is how people find everything full.
Which option works for a ferry leaving after 19:00?
Only Fira. The Athinios point closes at 19:00, so an evening sailing means storing in Fira, collecting there, and travelling down to the port with your bag. The hourly office, open to 23:30 in season, is the one that covers late departures.
When should I collect my bag before the last tender?
Be back in Fira 90 minutes before departure, not 30. That covers the collection stop, the descent queue at its worst in the final two hours before ships sail, and the walk to the tender berth. From Athinios, add the bus or taxi down the switchbacks.
