Santorini Airport Taxi Fares in 2026: What the Meter Should Say, Counted Line by Line

A taxi from Santorini Airport to Fira comes to about €16 when you add up the official Greek taxi tariff line by line: €1.80 to start the meter, 7.5 km of road at €1.25, two suitcases at €0.39 each and the €4 airport pick-up that drivers charge — a figure not confirmed in the decision text; the tables also show the fare without it. To Oia the same sum is about €30, to Kamari about €10, to the ferry port at Athinios about €21. The bus to Fira is €2.20. Most pages on this subject, ours included, give you a range like "€20–35"; this one shows the arithmetic so you can see where each euro goes and check it against the meter.

Taxi column: Tariff 2 at €1.25/km plus €1.80 flag-fall, two bags over 10 kg and the €4 airport pick-up — the amount drivers quote, unconfirmed in the decision text; the second table shows each fare with and without it. Distances are road kilometres from the passenger terminal, measured on 9 September 2026. Bus fares are from KTEL Santorini's official price list dated 19 May 2026 — a dash means that list gives no through fare for the village, so ask at Fira bus station; transfer prices are the sedan quotes on our transfers page on the same day. Why Tariff 2 and not the cheaper Tariff 1 is the point of this article, and the next two sections explain it.

The official tariff, component by component

Greek taxi fares are not set by the driver or the island. They are fixed nationally by a ministerial decision, currently no. 191290/2022, published in the Government Gazette as ΦΕΚ 3136/Β/21-6-2022. Every licensed taxi on Santorini runs the same meter with the same figures, all of which already include 13% VAT:

Seven of those eight lines I checked against three separate reproductions of the decision text (the law database e-nomothesia.gr, the tax portal taxheaven.gr and odigostoupoliti.eu) and they agree to the cent. The eighth is the airport pick-up. The ministry's tariff table has always carried a separate line for "other airports" beside Athens and Thessaloniki — the 2014 fare catalogue put it at €2.30 before VAT — so a charge of that kind exists. What I could not confirm is its current amount: two of the three reproductions of the 2022 table omit the airport lines altogether, the third says €4, and €4 is what drivers, guidebooks and our own taxi page quote. But I have not seen it in the decision, so the tables here show the fare both with and without it, and you are entitled to ask a driver which tariff line the extra €4 comes from.

Why the meter reads €1.25, not €0.90, in broad daylight

This is where the "€20–35" ranges come from, and it is rarely spelled out. Travel writing describes Tariff 2 as the night rate. It is — but that is only half of Article 3 of the decision. The text says Tariff 1 applies to distance covered inside the perimeter zone or the administrative limits of the taxi's home base (έδρα), and Tariff 2 to distance covered outside them — and, on top of that, to every kilometre between 00:00 and 05:00 wherever you are.

So a driver whose licence is based in one part of the island and who takes you to another can lawfully switch to Tariff 2 at midday. That is a 39% higher per-kilometre rate, and on the airport-to-Fira run it is the difference between €13.33 and €15.96 — or between €9.33 and €11.96 if you strip out the airport pick-up. Whether the whole municipality of Thira counts as one home zone, or only the town of Fira does, is something I could not settle from a primary source: the law that governs taxi home bases (Article 84 of Law 4070/2012) regulates how a base is changed but does not define its boundaries for Santorini. So this article gives you both sums. That is not a range: it is the two ends of what the tariff can produce — every kilometre at Tariff 1, or every kilometre at Tariff 2. A trip can also mix the two, since Article 3 charges each stretch by where it is driven, and then the total falls between the two columns.

All four columns include two pieces of luggage over 10 kg (€0.78). The rule is by weight, not bag type: an ordinary 20–23 kg suitcase counts, a small bag does not. With nothing over 10 kg, subtract €0.78; with four heavy cases, add €0.78. A night fare (00:00–05:00) has no column of its own because it equals the daytime out-of-zone column to the cent: the night surcharge is simply Tariff 2 at €1.25 applied everywhere.

How the distances were measured

The kilometre figures are not the "about 6 km to Fira" that appears on maps and, until now, on this site. Wherever it comes from, it does not match the road route, and the meter counts road, so I routed each trip from the passenger terminal itself (not the geometric centre of the airfield) to the centre of each village along the actual road network, using OpenStreetMap coordinates and the OSRM routing engine, on 9 September 2026:

• Fira: 7.5 km, about 10 minutes without traffic. The usual "6 km" understates the road route by 1.5 km, which at Tariff 2 is €1.88 — a good part of the gap between what people are told and what they pay.
• Oia: 18.4 km, about 21 minutes clear. In the sunset rush allow far longer: waiting time meters at €15 per hour, so twenty minutes stationary adds €5.
• Kamari: 3.1 km, 6 minutes. The closest resort to the airport, and the one ride where the €4 pick-up is almost half the fare.
• Athinios port: 11.4 km, 14 minutes to the port entrance. If you are connecting to a ferry, note that the pick-up fee on the return leg is the port rate of €1.07, not the airport €4.
• Perissa 15.6 km, Akrotiri 14.1 km, Vlychada 14.4 km, Emporio 13.1 km, Pyrgos 7.0 km, Messaria 4.4 km, Imerovigli 10.1 km.

Three honest caveats. The terminal forecourt is 174 m from the nearest routable road, and that stretch is not in the figures, so if anything the sums err low. For Athinios, Messaria and Vlychada the routing point is the bus stop at the entrance to the settlement rather than a notional centre, a difference of a few hundred metres and a few tens of cents. And for Akrotiri I set the coordinates by hand, because a routine search returns the archaeological site of ancient Akrotiri first, which is not the village and not where your hotel is.

Does the arithmetic match published prices?

Largely, yes — at the lower end of the published ranges, and only with Tariff 2 and the airport pick-up included. On 9 September 2026 a competing airport guide listed airport to Fira at €17–22 by day and €22–27 by night, and airport to Oia at €32 by day and €39 by night. My Tariff 2 sums are €15.96 and €29.58. By day the guide's prices sit €1.04 to €6.04 above the meter to Fira and €2.42 above it to Oia. By night the gap widens: the metered sum is unchanged, so €22–27 to Fira is €6.04 to €11.04 above it and €39 to Oia €9.42 above. At night, in short, published prices move further from the tariff than by day.

Run the same check with Tariff 1 and it collapses: €13.33 to Fira leaves €3.67 to €8.67 of the guide's daytime price unexplained. So the published ranges are not arbitrary: their lower end is close to what the tariff produces once the out-of-zone rate, the airport fee and luggage are counted — components a range hides. A residual of about a euro has several possible sources the arithmetic cannot separate: the round-up of a price agreed at the rank rather than run on the meter, the usual practice here (our taxi page explains the rank); the 174 m from the terminal my routing leaves out; a different drop-off point; or paid waiting — at €15 an hour, four minutes is a euro. The upper end — €6 above the meter by day, €11 by night — cannot be broken down without the actual route, drop-off point and waiting paid: at €15 an hour, 24 minutes in traffic is €6, 44 minutes €11. The metered figure is what lets you tell the two apart when someone says "€25 to Fira".

The bus: €2.20 and the one fare with no arithmetic

KTEL Santorini publishes its fares as a single price table, last updated 19 May 2026. The line that serves the airport — Fira – Kamari – Monolithos – Airport — costs €2.20 one way, paid in cash to the conductor on board. For night services between 00:30 and 05:00 the price list gives €2.80, which the operator describes as a 25% night supplement. Reduced fares are €1.10 for large families and passengers with disabilities and €1.70 for students. Luggage travels free in the hold.

The line's name puts Kamari on it, but I have not checked the timetable for a direct run; every other destination is reached by changing at Fira's bus station, and you pay for each leg separately: Fira – Oia is €2.20, so the airport to Oia by bus is €4.40; Fira – Perissa and Fira – Athinios are €2.70 each, so €4.90 in total. Set against the taxi, the airport-to-Fira bus costs about one seventh of the metered fare, a difference of €13.76 for one passenger. The ratio does not grow with distance, but the difference in euros does: €25.18 to Oia, €21.18 to Perissa. What you trade for that is time and a timetable: the change at Fira can turn a 21-minute taxi ride to Oia into well over an hour. Pre-booked transfer: what the premium buys

The last column of the first table is what a pre-booked private car quoted on 9 September 2026 for a standard sedan: roughly €30 to Fira or Kamari, €35 to Imerovigli, €40 to Athinios and €45–55 to Oia. Against the metered taxi that is a premium of about €14 to Fira, €20 to Kamari and €15–25 to Oia.

Whether that is worth paying depends on one question: will there be a taxi when you walk out? Santorini's taxi fleet is small for the number of summer arrivals, the rank at JTR empties at busy times, and after midnight it may not refill. What the booking promises is a driver waiting with your name and a price fixed before you land. For a flight landing between midnight and 05:00 the meter runs on Tariff 2 throughout: unchanged if the daytime trip already did, up by €2.63 to Fira and €6.44 to Oia if it ran on Tariff 1, same bags and airport fee. The published rank price moves too: by night the competing guide listed €22–27 to Fira on 9 September, so a transfer at roughly €30 is €3 to €8 above that published night price, not €14 above the meter. That narrower gap, and the thinness of the rank at that hour, is the case for booking. How to use these figures at the rank

• Know your number before you approach the car. Fira €16, Kamari €10.50, Imerovigli €19, Athinios €21, Oia €30 — those are the Tariff 2 sums with the airport fee and two bags. Treat them as a starting point, not a legal test: a quote close to them matches the arithmetic; €40 to Fira does not, and is worth a question.
• Ask "meter or fixed?" and accept either. At the airport rank a price is usually named before you get in; the tariff sum is what lets you judge it. Check it is for the car, not per person, and if the meter runs you are entitled to a printed receipt from it.
• If the meter is on, glance at the tariff indicator. Greek meters display a 1 or a 2. In daytime, a 2 means the driver is applying the out-of-zone rate — ask, politely, whether the trip leaves their home zone. Between 00:00 and 05:00 a 2 is simply correct.
• Weigh your bags rather than counting them. The luggage charge is €0.39 for each piece heavier than 10 kg — a typical 20–23 kg suitcase qualifies, a small bag does not — and it is not €1 per bag of any size. Two big cases add €0.78, not €5.
• Waiting is metered, traffic is waiting. €15 per hour, or 25 cents a minute. At sunset on the Oia road, or through Fira in August, this can move the sum by several euros without anyone doing anything wrong.
• Do not assume the car takes cards. Have the fare in cash; the ATMs at the airport are covered on our cash and currency page. Uber on the island is a booking layer over licensed cars with a minimum fare of around €36, so it does not undercut the meter — see our note on Uber in Santorini.
• Four people pay the same as one. Every figure here is per car. Sharing a taxi from the rank with another Fira-bound party is common and halves the sum.
